Building a pool on a hillside isn’t an inconvenience, it’s an opportunity. If you’ve always dreamed of a beautiful inground pool for you and your family to enjoy, but worry that a sloped backyard might ruin it for you, we have good news. Not only is building an inground swimming pool into a hill possible, it gives you some pretty interesting landscaping and pool construction options, and we know just the people to do it for you. Read on to learn about some of the great things you can do with a hillside inground pool.
Raised seating area or spa
An inground pool requires a flat and level area, so in order to build on a hill you’ll actually have to cut into it. This allows for some great tiered patios, where the seating area sits overlooking the pool, or vice versa. In some cases, you can even build a spa one level higher than the pool, and have it connected to the pool with a water feature, or stairs for easy access.
Slide or water feature
Hills make for a great excuse to add a water feature or slide to you inground pool. If your pool is being installed at the bottom of a hill a slide or waterfall would be the natural choice, as it can be built down the slope of the hill fairly easily. On the flip side, if your pool is going towards the top of the hill you have the option of adding an infinity edge feature. This feature gives the appearance of an edgeless pool, as the water runs over the side and into a catch basin.
Retaining Wall
One method of dealing with hills consists of building a tall retaining wall on the hill side of the pool. This is adds a visually striking element to your yard and makes your pool feel bigger and deeper because of the size of the wall. These walls can be made from masonry, poured concrete, or stacked stone or block. Of course, not all retaining walls need to be extra-large showpieces. Most serve the more functional purpose of holding soil back from the recently leveled area.
Drainage
Since water naturally flows downhill, building your inground pool at the bottom of a hill comes with some challenges. Heavy rain could mean a flooded yard and muddy water getting into your pool, so it’s important to make sure all surface water is routed around the pool. Tropical and exotic plants are a great way to suck water out of your yard, and add a stunning look to your pool.
