Your pool cover will help protect your pool and your pool water When you finally decide to close it down for the season, you’ll have some work to do to ensure everything is working like it should come spring. Here are a few things to keep an eye on when you’re getting ready to close your pool for the winter.
Use a Mid-Winter Algaecide
On the very last day you plan on having your pool open you need to add a mid-winter algaecide to your pool water. In order to circulate the algaecide, your pool pump should be kept on for a full 24-hour period. Think of this as an investment, since you’ll really see the payoff come spring and there isn’t much algae to deal with while opening your pool.
Drain Your Equipment
Once you’ve circulated the algaecide, you need to drain your equipment to prevent freezing. The pump, filter, and heater all need to be drained to prevent damage. If water is kept in your equipment and freezes, it will expand and can cause housing and lines to crack. You should also drain the pool water level to about four to six inches below the pool skimmer.
Check Your Cover
Your cover isn’t just to protect your pool, it protects you too. Before you’re planning on closing your pool make sure your cover is in working order and doesn’t have any issues. Once it’s on do your best to keep it clean and clear of any debris, and when the snow starts coming in use a broom to clear off heavy accumulation.
