By now pool season is over in Maryland, and with a polar vortex on its way, we’re all glad to be warm and cozy inside. But did you know you could have extended your pool season past the usual Labor Day close? And you could have opened the pool before Memorial Day? These two days are the traditional boundaries of pool season in Maryland, but they don’t have to be. Learn how to extend your pool season in this week’s blog!
How to Extend Your Pool Season in Maryland
Solar Pool Covers
A solar pool cover is a translucent pool cover you put on the pool when you’re not using it. The cover traps heat energy from the sun, warming up your pool. This can increase the temperature in your pool as much as 10-15 degrees. Using a solar cover also reduces evaporation from your pool, which saves you money on both water and chemical costs.
Pool Heaters
A pool heater is another great way to extend your pool season. Why wait for the water to warm up in the early summer when you can warm it up so much faster with a pool heater? On the other end of the season, pool heaters keep your pool warm into the fall, so you can continue to enjoy your pool after the summer is over. Most pool heaters in use are gas heaters, though heat pumps and solar heaters are also available. It’s important to use a pool heater with a solar pool cover to ensure the heat you’re adding to the pool isn’t being lost to the atmosphere!
Pool Enclosures
Pool enclosures are available in a number of configurations that can help extend your pool season. Completely enclosed enclosures will extend the season by quite a bit. Open-air enclosures in combination with a pool heater can also help you extend your pool season. A great thing about enclosures is that in addition to extending your pool season, they protect your pool from debris, as well as rain, which can upset the pH balance in your pool.
Patio Heaters and Fire Pits
Extending your pool season isn’t just about your pool, it’s about your outdoor living experience too. Adding a patio heater and/or fire pit to your outdoor living experience helps you extend your pool season and enjoy your outdoor life even after the summer is over.
