Many homeowners go on vacation about once per year and over 75% tend to go not only in the summer, but at locations that have a place to swim and enjoy the outdoors.
For the families who own swimming pools at their home and vacation elsewhere, here are a few easy tips and reminders about caring for your pool while out of town.

Phone a Friend or Neighbor
This might seem a bit simple, but it is key at keeping your pool running and maintaining its cleanliness.
Ideally, those that help would already be familiar with maintaining a pool and its proper operation. Have your friend or neighbor check the following about once per day:
Emptying the skimmer basket Skim the pool surface (be sure to leave out the proper tools) Check the filter pressure and backwash if necessary Do a water test Add chemicals if and only if absolutely necessary
Using a Timer
While not everyone has a timer installed with their pool system, these devices can help automate some functions necessary for the best water health.
If you do have a timer, set it to run every 8 to 12 hours.
Check Your Water Before You Leave
Before you leave on your vacation, have your pool water checked. Many home tests will do just fine with this, but if not, take a sample to a local pool store. One of the biggest notations is to ensure that the pH and alkalinity are properly balanced.
