Cracks in an inground pool can cause some real problems if left alone for too long. If you have an older inground swimming pool, chances are you may have started to notice some problems. Swimming pool cracks can range from the manageable to the “call the pro’s” kind. We’ve broken them down into three categories so you can easily figure out if you can patch the crack yourself, or if you’ll need some help. Then again, maybe this is the perfect reason to start planning your new custom pool.
Surface Cracks
If you notice small cracks in the plaster of your swimming pool’s surface, don’t worry. These types of cracks are fairly easy to repair and don’t take much effort. Simply grab some pool putty, a screwdriver and some goggles. Jump on in and use the screwdriver to clean out the crack so the putty can get a better hold on the plaster. Mix the putty and roll it out to fit the length of the crack. Fill the crack with putty, smooth it out, and let it set.
Deeper Cracks
Some cracks can require grinding through the plaster and into the pool’s concrete shell. These types of can be done on your own, but you run the risk of seriously damaging your pool if you don’t do it right. We recommend calling a professional to assess the crack and recommend the appropriate course of action.
Dangerous Cracks
If there’s a problem with the soil beneath the shell of your swimming pool, whether the soil has shifted leaving your pool unsupported in some areas or some other problem, it can lead to major cracks. If a pool is cracked along the wall and across the floor, a professional pool renovation company will come in and cut out rectangles in the plaster every foot along the crack before drilling a hole on either side of the crack. Large pool staples are then placed to hold the shell together and prevent any further separation.
