Your pool filter working with your sanitizer to make sure your pool water stays clean and enjoyable Closing down your pool for the season might have you thinking about upgrading or replacing some of your equipment. While most pool equipment lasts a few years, your pool filter is the one piece that will need to be replaced more frequently since it does the heavy lifting. Telling when you need a new filter can be a bit tricky, though. Here are a few signs that will tell you it’s time for a new pool filter.
Cartridge Filters
There are three clear signs your cartridge filter needs to be replaced. The first is a broken band around the filter medium. These bands hold the filter medium in place, so if one or more is broken you’ll need to replace the filter. Second, if your filter is dirty or slimy, even after giving it a rinse, it’s done its job and is ready for retirement. An exceptionally dirty or oily filter won’t allow water to flow through it very well and will add unnecessary strain on your pump. Finally, if the plastic on either end of the filter is cracked it will give dirty water a way around the filter medium. The filter therefore won’t be doing its job and needs to be replaced to make sure all dirty water is flowing through the filter.
Sand Filters
Some people say that sand is a permanent media filter, meaning it never needs to be replaced. While sand media will last a long time with proper maintenance, it should still be replaced every 5-7 years. The reason is that as the sand media ages it loses its sharp edges and is less effective at trapping dirt and debris.
